best band as musicians
What band do you think is/was the best as musicians, as a whole band, not just one player in the band? What band was just full of talent all the way through, great drummer, bassist, guitarist, singer, or whatever else (keyboardist, etc.)?

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
Bass- Vic Wooten, disputedly the best bass player in the world
Banjo- Bela Fleck, best modern banjo player
Percussion- Futureman, instead of playing a drum set he plays his own invention, the Drumitar. There is a pic of it here
Horns- Jeff Coffin, has been known to play two saxophones at a time.

They're all fine players...but they have nothing to do with rock music at all...

Led Zeppelin great everything - singer, guitarist, bass/keyboard and drummer.
R.E.M. and U2 tie for me as great as bands but individually I wouldn't put them in a contest for the best of categories for any of their individual instruments but I would with Zeppelin.

Doobie Bros. There will never be another album like "The Captain And Me".
Mother Superior, Kings X... a lot of the power trios come close.
