It's not even a close contest in my mind. It has to be the Thai Elephant Orchestra.

No one can rock & roll like 12 pachyderms.

Their improvisional skills are excellent as well.

dream theater is pretty good... i'm sure there have been bands with much more talent than those listed here so far; bands that never made it into mainstream. i've been to shows and seen bands play better than it seemed could be humanly possible, but, unfortunately, talent doesn't seem to be what makes a band these days.

Reading these lists makes me realize that people really need to start listening to more Prog-Rock around here...

Then grab onto it, it's just for you
Give a little squeeze and say, "How do you do?"

Led & Who are the top two IMO

Honorable mentions:
Tool
Slayer (with Lombardo)
Alison Krauss & Union Station (not rock)
The Band

QUEENSRYCHE

With the outstanding vocalist Geoff Tate, one of the best drummers to ever hold sticks in Scott Rockenfield, two fantastic guitarsists who each bring different style to the band as well as compositional abilities and technical prowess (Degarmo and Wilton), and Eddie Jackson on bass it is VERY difficult to compete with Queensryche in the area of musicianship.

I believe their current line up does not include Chris Degarmo.
