Your First

What was the genre of music that motivated you to really get into music in the first place? I don't think everybody had a wide taste in music from the beggining. In other words, what was the first genre of music that you listened to? If this is already a thread please don't hesitate to tell me.

Metal was the first genre where I actually made some effort to discover artists and not just listen to what was popular in the media.

Mine was rap, cause it was cool to like rap. Then it was cool to like Sum 41. Then the trend was nu metal. Then I found Radiomute and I stopped giving a fuck what everyone else thought was cool to listen to. I still listen to rap though (not sum 41 lol).

Yes it is from Dogma, one of my favorite movies. The band that sampled it was Origin. The song was off of Informis Infintas Inhumantis ( an awesome cd by the way), the song is called called Inhuman. THe song begins with the quote on my signature, and then the brutal death metal starts. Get it? LOL

Yes, Yes, Yes! Funk-o-delic!

however not my first.

It was so weird, I was a real electro-head as a kid, when I was 13-14 I used to get anything with a really 'phat' beat, from Chemical Brothers to Mr.Oizo dub beats.

Really odd for a kid, eh?

Anyway, I soon followed the trend (although it would have been cool to stick to the electric stuff) and became a hardcore punk. Maybe it was for the best, as otherwise maybe I never would have liked rock, which I do now immensely. I used to listen too all the obvious choises; New Bomb Turks, NOFX, Rancid, Voodoo Glow Skulls et al.

Then I got into that new fangled metal; but this was between the ages 16-17; Incubus, Korn, Alien Ant Farm (but i still like the first album!), System of a Down.

Suddenly, at 17 and a half, I got all grown up. And yes, it was the influence of a girl .
She was into music from the 60s (Pink Floyd, Jeffereson Airplane, Dylon), but also into modern folk music. That really messed up my perspective, and I thought to myself, that's it i'm going to buy an album from every genre. I did, And I realised there's no point descriminating anymore, as all these albums provide stuff I like. So that's it. The next 2 and a half years I spend wasting my money buying too many albums, but I have a CD/MP3 collection others at my age are envious of....

I have to say I listened to pop first, and I mean really mainstream, charts music... (Luckily I left that period behind me) But I remember liking some rock artists as well, such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Verve , U2 and Alanis.
The first album I ever bought was Lauryn Hill's.
