I started to listen to rap in the early nineties. Back then I couldn't understand too much of the lyrics, but my love for the music grew as my English got better. Today I listen to nearly every genre, but rap is still my favourite one.

I suppose Metal was the first genre I was a big fan of, but I found myself getting bored of the bands pretty quickly. I was a massive Metallica fan for a while, but then pretty much listened only to grindcore, and got bored when all the grindcore bands started sounding American and commercial.

After that, I found goth and post-punk, then Industrial, now I pretty much listen to anything. I'm mainly trying to track down interesting folk music at the moment though, and roughly 60% of everything I buy in that genre isn't as good as I'd hoped.

It was pop for me too... Natalie Imbruglia, No Doubt and even Laura Pausini
And the Swedes: Roxette and ...ugh Ace of Base...
I don't remember the first album I bought myself, but the first I got was from the Belgian pop band The Radios I think...
Then I switched from radiostation and became gradually first a Metallica (not that big), then a Nirvana fan (bit bigger), then started to like dEUS, a Belgian alt.rock band and similar music really much... around the same time I started listening to the Belgian folk band Laïs too... they're pretty accessible, but brought me to lots of Scandinavian sounds...
now I'm open to lots of genres I think... though I wouldn't say that I know a lot about all...

I remember when I was younger I didn't like dEUS at all.. It was only one or two years ago that I began to appreciate it. And I have Laïs' "Dorothea" (which is quite good), my grandmother gave that cd to me

Indie. And Brit-pop, through punk, to ska! Although i had always heard ska songs as a child on TV or a myriad of other places, and new the tunes in my head, even though i didnt know it as ska music. So it was almost natural that would be the progression.
