If he character:zero is asking for essential there is only one really essential Captain Beefheart and that is Trout Mask Replica. We are talking about landmark recording.

Safe as Milk is a great recording and Clear Spot is a good one, but combined they are still not Trout Mask Replica material. And that's one man's reporting.

I'd put "Lick My Decals Off..." on par with Trout Mask Replica...so let's make it two essential recordings.

13th Floor Elevators: "Bull of the Woods" - I know it's sacriledge amoung Elevator fans, but I like this album the best

Me too, I think it has a more drunken side to it.
Shame I lost it though

Everyone liking the Elevators should check out the song "Timemachine" by Satori, it's on one of the Mindrocker volumes and sounds just like Rocky Erickson!!

Other essential stuff when you're ready for it would be :

-SF Sorrow by The Pretty Things, better than the Beatles ! Is that possible?

-July's self titled album

-Sopwith Camel's first album which is maybe more for the painkiller addict but has a nice little layer of psych on it.

-We are ever so clean by the Blossom Toes, this one requires some liking for the British side of things.

-Sunshine Superman by Donovan

-Did anyone already mention The Seeds?

-Not from the sixties but psychedellic as hell : Liquid Sound Company

-Tomorrow

Hell, even the Beau Brummels had some excellent songs!!

Brian Eno - Another Green World

such an amazing album

Edit : i dunno why i mentioned this album.. i read towards the beginning of this thread someone mentioned Brian Eno.. this album's not that pychedelic nor progressive.. but I mean, Rober Fripp and Phil Collins both play in this album.. it's more ambient than anything else.. and he (Eno) really rocks out on the synthesizer

I didn't recommend "Trout Mask" because he was asking to explore psychedelic music and "Trout Mask" is an INCREDIBLY inaccessible album. I chose my picks based on what I thought would give good introductions to the particular type of psychedelic that each artist represented.

Ah that sucks that you lost it! I think Stacy Sutherland wrote most of the stuff on that album and he REALLY knew how to make druggy music!

I wouldn't call it as good as the Beatles. It's not exactly the most fleshed-out album you'll hear, but it's got a lot of great ideas, albeit done with a lot of amateurism in my opinion. "Baron Saturday" off of that album is one of my favorite songs of all time - it's just too cool.

Brainticket's 1971 album Cottonwoodhill has been called the most psychedelic record ever made. It is definately out there and anyone who likes psychedelic music should check it out.

I really like the Beau Brummels, but they weren't psychedelic (although they did have many pre-psychedelic sound elements,, like in the guitar sound of "Just a Little")...

I agree... Plus, I just don't think "Trout Mask Replica" is very good (I realize I am in the minority on that)... But, at very least, it should not be given to someone just starting out in psychedelia...

I agree they weren't THE psychedelic band of that time, but these guys knew how to use melodies to the max. Just listen to "In Good Times" or "Here we are again". You gotta admitt they have an edge
