Then move into stuff like Van Der Graaf Generator - A plague of lighthouse keepers, a must for all prog/psyc fans!

I agree with those who suggested the Nuggets sets. But I must point out that Nuggets II is vastly superior to the first set. The trouble with the first set is that despite the sub "Arty-facts From the First Psychedelic Age" is a bit misnomer since it actually focusses on garage bands some of which happen to run into psychedelic. It's a great set, but the Kingsmen's Louis Louis psychedelic?

Compilations are the right idea for getting into psych. Pick up a few good ones, and then decide what you like and seek out albums by the artists you prefer.

In the meantime though there is one album I want to recommend to you that brought me great joy when I was your age, as it still does today more than ten years later. Chips From the Chocolate Fireball by the Dukes of Stratosphere. (AKA Brit 80's alternative band, XTC in psychedelic mode.)

I can't believe that Syd hasn't mentioned Forever Changes by Love.

Most of my choices have already been mentioned, but it appears that both Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and the "White Album" (actual title The Beatles) have somehow slipped through the cracks.

I would be sure to include the first album by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (self titled, of course).

Close To The Edge and Fragile by my beloved Yes have already been mentioned. I would add the other member of the "Holy Trinity of Prog", The Yes Album to that list.

I'm not trying to speak for Syd or anything, but I think the appeal of "Forever Changes" is more for it's quazzy folkyness than it's psychedelia.

Here's some albums to get you going.

Kaleidoscope (UK): "Tangerine Dream" - Pure psychedelic music at its best. Defenite must have.

Captain Beefheart: "Clear Spot"

Can: "Ege Bamyasi": Great intro into a shamefully underappreciated band.

13th Floor Elevators: "Bull of the Woods" - I know it's sacriledge amoung Elevator fans, but I like this album the best. And it has some of their trippiest tunes "Street Song" and "Scarlet and Gold". And you don't really have to put up with that electric jug that tends to get annoying on their other albums. You'll eventually have to get all their albums though cause they are psychedelic par excellence (they even believed all the druggy mantras of the day).

United States of America: "United States of America": Yup that's some good psychedelic music.

There's plenty more of course, but don't want you to think you need to break the bank just in exploring a new genre.

Oh yeah...Collectors' Choice music has a compilation CD of both albums by HP Lovecraft. Great late 60s psychedelia...I highly reccomend it.
