Punk vs Metal

What do you prefer, punk rock or metal?

I seriously have a lot of trouble answering this question as I am a big fan of both genres.
I will have a think about it and get back to you.

Cause i have never been too much of a punk rocker. I really just got my start with punk. THis is just my opinion now. I have a feeling i'm still gonna prefer metal after i have listened to enough punk rock. I don't really know why i like metal better. I'll probobly end up with the punk hardcore metal thrasher thing you put up there. but metal until then.

Given the variety that metal has to offer, I really don't think that Punk can compare...I think that the only real thing that Punk has contributed to music has been in the area of attitude, the particular DIY aesthetic, and raw aggression...granted, there are differences in style among the Punk community, but I would say that, as a matter of personal taste, these just can't compare to what has come out of Metal...it should also be noted that some of the worst music ever made came about as a result of both styles, and yet some of the greatest music has as well...but overall, I've got to give it to Metal, which can often times incorportate the same agression and raw energy of Punk and take it into directions that Punk itself could never do...

well generally i find that punk is much more selfconscious and directed style of music, yes even your GBH and whatnot, whereas you can get the most idiotic hicks making metal, like bon scott or metallica. the fact that punk adheres to this loose idea of minimalism means that people have to more or less think a bit on what they are making and what it means (even if they dont think too much about it) whereas in metal, fucking anything goes, whether you want to be motorhead or led zeppelin.

what always turned my off about the whole punk business is the 'angry' aspect. i dig the music, the ideals even the fashion, but why does there have to be this contrived and pretended anger? all that moshing and shit, its for idiots who are desperately trying to be 'punk,' and that is what punk is at its worst: FAKE ANGER. alot of times this posturing takes precedence over the music. for the most part it has fostered the mystery ingredient which most metal lacks, restraint.

metal offers something great, which is that it has none of the hangups and strict musical simplicity of punk, instead you can do anything as long as it sounds 'cool.' now, unfortunately that opens the door for tool, manson, black dog, NWOHM, korn, stairway to heaven, hairmetal and lots of other nasties (remember, 0 restraint), but it is very liberating nonetheless. thats just the problem, punk has this built in bullshit detector that prevents usurpers and fakes from taking over the music (well, at least before the britney-ization of punk), while metal lets anyone with ridiculous facial hair and a drop-d tuning in on the action.

in conclusion, metal can be great, fun, exciting, but punk music can be all of those things but without having that problem that in the back of your mind, you know the guys making the tunes are fucking morons and no intelligent person would ever write a song about alexander the great, or include synthesized strings at the completely inappropriate moment or something. at least in punk, you are assured that no matter how shitty the song is (and boy can they be shitty sometimes) the song will not include too much studio fruitiness and be 2 1/2 minutes long.

I prefer Metal, but I don't consider myself a "Metal Head".

I like Metal better, but I like both these genre... But I have to admit I am surprised that both of these genre seem more popular among younger folks today then classic rock... Of course some metal or early metal is considered classic, but in general I find classic rock superior... To me both Metal and Punk are good, but are so limited in their scope compared to the whole universe of rock music that I could never just listen to one exclusively for more than a day or so... I need variety...
