Punk first:
Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come ( a bit of Hardcore Punk, a bit of Metal, a bit of Jazz, a bit of Electronic, etc... )
Husker Du are aslo a well-respected hardcore punk outfit that released some very diverse records in the mid-80s.
The Clash also immediately come to mind, London Calling was filled with diverse tracks...
Metal bands usually stick to a single style it seems, in general, but I find Dream Theater's records to be pretty diverse.

Good reply... I just wish more punk was even in the same league as The Clash... Sadly, few are... Husker Du is another good example... My problem is that these types of bands are few and far between and both genre stick (in general) to the same formula... And that formula works well within it's structure... But for me, I need more than just those styles in my listening... I actually have no problem with either of the genre... I like them both, I just find it interesting that younger people (in general) seem to like these two styles as much as they do... Perhaps as they get older their musical tastes will grow (that's what happen to me)... It seems so limiting to only like the harder aspects of rock, but if that's what moves ya, that's all that really matters...

The problem with those examples is that they mostly stick to one style...he asked for bands that have diverse catalogues.

Oh and then Ulver. I mean they made natten's madrigal and then came up with stuff like A Quick Fix of Melancholy. It does not get more diverse than that even if you try

I am not familiar with most of the bands you listed... Are you telling me they incorporate other musical styles into their recordings? (and, I'm not talking about a jazz improv on top of some thrash metal, I mean seperate from the metal genre in total... Adding touches of other styles within the metal or punk hard guitar style is not the diversity I'm looking for... I'm talking about real music diversity that shows growth beyond the metal or punk genre)...

You might want to check out Opeth, parciularly Blackwater Park and Still-Life, they inforporate Death Metal, Progressive Rock, and more conventional acoustic melodic rock, usually with the same song...

Sepultura might also be a good choice, with the Tribal/Ethnic elements of "Roots"...
