Metal for me. But its a tough comparison. Many, many styles of Metal VS. relatively few styles of punk

Metal, I've always felt punk music was always a bit overrated, and its not really my style.

I'd say that may be the fault of the listener more than the style...

Black Metal/Death Metal
Progressive/Experimental Metal
Metallic Hardcore/Grindcore
Rap Metal/Nu Metal
Industrial Metal
Sludge Metal/Doom Metal
Thrash/Speed Metal

...and whatever I forgot. I wouldn't really call that "limited", considering all the variations of the above that are possible...

Give me a metal or punk band that play a variety of musical styles at a decent quality and I will be more than glad to check them out... As far as I know, there aren't many. Unless you are counting Led Zeppelin as metal...

You didn't say that you were loooking for a single band that was diverse in their playing, just diversity among the style in general...

But to play along:

Punk first:

Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come ( a bit of Hardcore Punk, a bit of Metal, a bit of Jazz, a bit of Electronic, etc... )

Husker Du are aslo a well-respected hardcore punk outfit that released some very diverse records in the mid-80s.

The Clash also immediately come to mind, London Calling was filled with diverse tracks...

Metal bands usually stick to a single style it seems, in general, but I find Dream Theater's records to be pretty diverse.
