Mingus was the King on the bass. As well as being one of the top 3 composers with Duke and Monk in Jazz.
Ever read his book? The chapter on how to train your cat to use a toilet is worth the price alone.

The compositional aspect of Charles Mingus is what really turns me on. His music sounds like it was composed yesterday. Timeless. Modern. Deep. The angry black man aspect of his music/life adds a powerful element to the mix.
The 'Mingus Ah Um' album would be a good place for Mingus newbe's to dip their toes into his musc.
