I picked it up just last Friday night. Since Seba and I had our discussion in the crazy musician thread that led me to checking Emperor and Mayhem out. I figured I should listen to what groups that had so many murderers and cannibals involved with them.

I had never heard Emperor before and according to the notes on the wrapping it was supposed to be a new remastered version of Welkin. As well as the Black Metal recording of the year it came out.

I started listening to it in the car (I was doing about 140 at the time, but that is between us ) and I thought I got a defective disk. Maybe the most defective disc I had ever come across.

I could tell there was someone that at least was there and he was attempting to sing/scream. But it sounded like they mixed out the singer of the recording on the new remastering. At least that is what I thought. And it bugged me actually. And I am not that easily bugged. It didn't help that I was in a rotten mood because of the at that time upcoming unpleasant business in Chicago.

Later that night I was informed by Seba that not only was this was it was supposed to sound, but all Emperor's recordings are like this. It only makes me wonder just how shitty it must have sounded before they remastered it. Poor Seba did his best but I just got more irritated. It was also getting closer to our having to leave to Chicago.

Even with headphones it only drove me crazier. Because with headphones I could at least tell that there was someone there and he was at least singing/screaming and it was not just my imaganation.

I started getting disctracted by my wife in trying to get me to get going and Seba with some musical discussion. I was so distracted that I stopped paying attention to what was playing and didn't notice the "problem". I even actually started to enjoy the music. I don't know why they even bothered with lyrics. You can't make out a single thing being said.

It is still not something I will be listening to that much. Might use it for some room clearing in the future.

When I get bored enough, I am going to have to check just what Black Metal recordings came out that year for this to be #1.

So, should I even bother with Mayhem?

Well, Mayhem would probably be more accesible than Emperor(which I'm sure you'll like more after some listens), but at best get only their first two albums, or even better only the track 'Det Som en Gang Var'.

Accesible is not the issue with what I am talking about. A lot of what I listen to is not accesible in any sense of the word.

My problem is with really inferior production/recording techniques. Garage bands with a cheap tape recorder can make better recordings than this. Their music may suck but at least you could hear it, which would be a bad thing in that case.

If they had included some kind of warning that it was a piece of rubbish recording made by one of the worst engineers in music industry history that would have been different.

Instead they make it seem like you're getting some vast improvement in sound quality with a new remastering. I have recordings made 90-100 years ago with prehistoric recording techniques. They sound light years better than something recorded in the last 7 years.

You get past the shitty recording and the music is not that bad. Though the drumming does get one dimensional and repetitive a great deal of the time.

I've only heard De Mysteriis dom Sathanas by Mayhem, but it has about the same production values as Anthems to Welkins at Dusk, which was still quite decent to my ears.

Oh, and I was a damn idiot and mentioned Burzum's albums(instead of mayhem's) in the last post :ice:.

Grasshopper, you're asking me if I have heard a Napalm Death recording? And their first at that, which was issued 4 years before you were.

Keep in mind I was listening to Metal before it had a genre name.

Hatred Surge was actually Napalm Death's first album, released in 1985.
