I picked it up just last Friday night. Since
Seba and I had our discussion in the crazy musician thread that led me to checking
Emperor and
Mayhem out. I figured I should listen to what groups that had so many murderers and cannibals involved with them.
I had never heard
Emperor before and according to the notes on the wrapping it was supposed to be a new remastered version of
Welkin. As well as the
Black Metal recording of the year it came out.
I started listening to it in the car (I was doing about 140 at the time, but that is between us

) and I thought I got a defective disk. Maybe the most defective disc I had ever come across.
I could tell there was someone that at least was there and he was attempting to sing/scream. But it sounded like they mixed out the singer of the recording on the new remastering. At least that is what I thought. And it bugged me actually. And I am not that easily bugged. It didn't help that I was in a rotten mood because of the at that time upcoming unpleasant business in
Chicago.
Later that night I was informed by
Seba that not only was this was it was supposed to sound, but all
Emperor's recordings are like this. It only makes me wonder just how shitty it must have sounded before they remastered it. Poor
Seba did his best but I just got more irritated. It was also getting closer to our having to leave to
Chicago.
Even with headphones it only drove me crazier. Because with headphones I could at least tell that there was someone there and he was at least singing/screaming and it was not just my imaganation.
I started getting disctracted by my wife in trying to get me to get going and
Seba with some musical discussion. I was so distracted that I stopped paying attention to what was playing and didn't notice the "problem". I even actually started to enjoy the music. I don't know why they even bothered with lyrics. You can't make out a single thing being said.
It is still not something I will be listening to that much. Might use it for some room clearing in the future.
When I get bored enough, I am going to have to check just what
Black Metal recordings came out that year for this to be #1.
So, should I even bother with
Mayhem?
