Tape to Comp

Is there a way I can transfer tape to computer for MP3's and such? If it's important we used a 2-track recorder on a blank 2 sided tape.

I was looking for that old thread in RM about transfering from vinyls/cassettes to computer. but I couldn't find it.

anyway, I think you need to have a sound card to capture the audio from your cassette tapes to your computer. not sure about the details, but that's what I remember from the other thread.

yup it's totally do-able... i've done it many MANY times...

first you need to use a tape recorder with a line out (or headphone jack) and run a cable between it and the line-in port on your soundcard...

adjust your audio controls for recording instead of playback

open your favorite wave editing program (soundforge works wonders)

hit record on your pc... play on your tape deck... and keep an eye on the levels so that it records properly...

once you've got the wav file converting it to mp3 should be pretty easy depending on what prog you're using...

Does the quality suffer any through the transfer? We got a pretty good recorder and tapes but its still not the greatest quality.

if you've got patience you can improve the quality of the wav file a bit after you transfer it... but ultimately it'll be tape quality...

Check out GoldWave. It has a great feature that allows you to record the noise the tape makes between tracks and use that to remove over 90% of the noise from te tracks after recording..... it has a ton of features and I love how easy it is to learn to use....
