Find groups with an excellent bass player and you will hear the bass. The Who and Led Zeppelin are two others that should be mentioned.

You really want to listen to the bass check out Jazz.

You want the bass listen to the King of the bass, Charles Mingus.

One of the more modern bands with a bit of bass peaking through is Thrice, I'm pretty sure alot of people dont like them but its true.

You also hear a lot of bass in Pink Floyd's music, Waters is awesome!

The Who and Led Zeppelin rule.

And yes, rock just isn't the same without an inventive bass line: i.e. My Generation or Ramble On

Oh yeah, and on a sidenote: has anyone heard of the band Death From above 1979 or something? I've seen the video for Romantic Rights and it looks like it's just a singing drummer and a bassist, yet it clearly sounds like a guitar's there, anyone care to explain iof they've heard these guys?

On one hand, it's pretty easy to distort a bass... (( *cough* Ruins *cough* ))

...on the other hand, it's even easier to overdub. Particularly if it's a music video/studio recording...
