You're absolutely right. They only influenced thousands of metal acts to follow them...what merit could their music possibly have? I mean, they only pioneered
speed-metal, why the hell would they want to play so damned fast?
Seriously, you should look at this this way: if you don't like extreme metal as a musical form, try not to judge artists in that category based on your experience with other stylistic idioms. The qualities that make up good extreme metal are completely different from what makes good pop/rock, jazz, electronica, country, avant-garde, etc. and you should respect that. You can say that you don't like a particular type of music, but to dismiss one of the primary innovators of a musical style as shit and over-rated just makes you look ignorant. Intensity, aggression, complexity, variety, originality; in general, these are the qualities that define quality extreme metal, and at their prime in the mid/early '80s they were the cutting edge in those areas, so to say they suck is pretty ludicrous. They helped shape Thrash, Death, and Grind...a good chunk of the most important developments in the past two decades of metal...I'd say that has to count for something, don't you?
Anyway, end of rant...if you'd prefer melody and accessibility, just don't bother with music of this type and don't comment on it.
