*bitch slaps you* No. I never said Purple Haze wasn't a good song. I said it doesn't show off his guitar skills. *bitch slaps you again* hehe

I think most people who die tragically young tend to be a little overrated. Hendrix was an awesome talent but I think people tend to sentimentalize his music.

This is where I get hung up on Hendrix.. I have stated in other threads that if Clapton had died in the early 70's, he would receive the same sort of god-like status Hendrix does... I still am not sure I would say Hendrix is overrated, because he truly was amazing... But if we just based his "official" releases (while he was alive) against the best 4 or 5 albums by many others, he may not rank as high on the overall list... For example, take the Rolling Stones 4 or 5 best,, they match up as good or better than Hendrix 4 or 5, and yet the Stones are bashed by many (especially people under 30)...
I don't know, the died early factor is in play and sometimes that does skew things... One thing for sure, Hendrix was great, I am not sure if he is overrated...

As a guitarist hes not overrated at all...though there r quite a few guitarists as good as him(Seba posted in one thread) but as a rock star....in a way he was. Some believe, "Hes to rock what Black Sabbath is to Metal" & there i disagree...

And anyone who says Hendrix is overrated should be bitched slapped right now. hehe

ok, hendrix is not, despite popular belief, the greatest guitarist of all time. don't get me wrong, he was amazing, but even people like stevie ray vahn are far more talented guitarists. were this is questioned is tht hendrix, in a four year career, affected rock more than people like stevie did in 30 year careers. so i'm saying tht there is no doubt tht hendrix left his mark on the music world but he only had a handfull of good songs from a couple of albums.

I agree with just about everything you've said, except for the last point. I think there's definitely more than a handful of good songs in Hendrix's catalog...but everything else you said is dead on target. He was not, technically speaking, the greatest guitarist...but he may well be the greatest guitar innovator of all time. And I would easily place him in my list of the most influential 5 musicians of the last 50 years.

i agree with wht u say about hendrix being a rock innovator, and i would like to change what i said about hendrix only having a handfull of good songs, he has many great songs, but i find tht most of them were on his first album, not tht good songs weren't able to be found on his other albums, but they were few and far between most the time.
