Beautiful Avant-Garde
In general, Avant-Garde music isn't revered for its accessibility or melodic appeal. That said, nothing restricts Avant-Garde/Experimental music from entering the abstract/subjective realms of good taste, harmonic beauty, and general musicality. That said, the point of this thread is to list those pieces of Avant-Garde music that you enjoy the most based not on how groundbreaking, innovative, or adventurous they are; for this thread, discuss only those pieces that you find most appealing from the perspective of their immediate musical appeal...in short, what experimental music do you think "sounds the best" to your ears?
I'll post my own selections at a later time.

Derek Bailey/Evan Parker/Han Bennink's Topagraphy of Lungs is incredible.
John Coltrane's A Love Supreme is really beautiful.
Peter Brotzmann Octet's Machine Gun is a raucously good time!
I'll post other selections later.

I take it you mean Post 60's Jazz and not the true meaning of avant-garde?

I was just making a general statement about Avant-Garde music from the perspective of the casual music listener, regardless of style or period, as most music of this sort is intended as a purely academic form of exploration, rather than necessarily being "appealing" (( again, these notions are horribly abstract...but bear with me)). Avant-Garde music is usually judged on innovation first and foremost, so I felt the need to start this thread and discuss Avant-Garde music that you first respond to because of its immediate appeal, regardless of accomplishment, whatever that may be. Again, this is very subjective and abstract...basically, what do you think are some of the most "beautiful" pieces of Avant-Garde music?

is Godspeed You Black Emperor avant garde? I guess not, but if so I'd probably pick something from them or from a related band...

ah right... though it's difficult to pick or even name one piece by them...
anyway, I'll go with "13 angels standing guard 'round the side of your bed" from A Silver Mt Zion for now
