Honourable mentions:
Coil, Nurse with Wound, Front 242, Interpol, The Residents, Angels of Light, Good Charlotte.

Damn, I should be able to think of more bands who still exist.

Seriously, if it was just best modern band then I could sit tight and say Death. But since its taken as best working band I have to go with Opeth(I know you saw that coming ), but really its definitely not Radiohead. I mean the word consistency has to have some merit, doesn't it?

i would say that it would be radiohead. not only because they have had a very successful time, such as ok computer and the bends are both very successfull albums but because they have evolved their style of music. alot of bands around are not able to evolve and so end up doing the same thing they have done for years but radiohead have been experimenting with different types of music, their latest cd hail to the theif is evidence of that.

I don't really get what you mean by consistency? Are you saying that because their style of music has changed and evolved; they are inconsistant? I would view a change as hardly a negative, in this case Radiohead had been able to keep me listening as their style changed from The Bends, to Hail To The Thief.

i think i would have gone with guided by voices, but perversely, like phish, they are breaking up, if they are not already broken up.

Well, apart from Ok Computer they did not have a full fledged masterpiece.
