Need some advice for my setup. Beginner wants more....

Hey guys, first post.

I have recently started expirimenting with electronic instruments in the past few months. My first piece of equipment was a Korg Electribe R (the rhythm synth in the series). This was a great starting piece, as it taught me the basics behind waveform alteration and manipulation. Great fun, but a little too "pre-packaged" for my tastes once I figured it out. I wanted something with a bit more tweak-able and complex. Enter my new piece: Microkorg Synth.

This thing is amazingly versatile, and the interface is extremely cool, once learned (old school knob interface with no screens = awesome)

But now I have a rhythm section and a synth section. How can I combine them to make some more complex stuff? I know I can MIDI in/out them so that the drum machine can play when the synth keys are pressed or vice versa; but I want them to go to the same output source, so that I can create a rhythm pattern with the Electribe sequencer/synth, and the sequence OVER IT with tones I create with the microkorg. Would I need a sampler for this? To sample synth tones to be called on demand for sequence?

I know this reeks of noobdom, but feel free to get reasonably technical if you must, I've picked up this stuff here and there so I should understand you.

Thanks in advance
