Puddle of mudd is awful. They come of as a big cheap Nirvana rip off to me, and not even a passable one like Silverchair.

Anyway, I would suggest, Death Cab For Cutie, Elliot Smith, Bright Eyes, and maybe The Bends for angsty break up type listening. Non of those are punk, although Bright Eyes may be considered emo.
