Hair Metal was about glamour and being a rock and roller but that also was about giving the fans what they wanted. Nu Metal is mostly a joke in my opinion, they are a bunch of kids that decided they could play instruments, reword lyrics and make a few bucks, get a label and ride it out.

I've seen a few bands in concert and the Hair Metal bands always out perform the Nu Metal. They just don't know how to excite their audience, they think alot of swearing and yelling like constipated baboons is entertaining, mind you it is to a degree, but compared to lets say a Kiss concert, Nu Metal bands might as well entertain labotomy patients. Now that's not saying there are not some outstanding Nu Metal bands, but Hair Metal was based around this and most Hair Metal bands know how to work their fans and make the experience worth it.

Like someone has already said, hair metal was ridiculous music made by ridiculous musicians leading ridiculous lives, etc, but was very cheesy and fun and doesn't have all the "artistic" pretensions of nu-metal. Also, while hair metal is very cheesy, they were very good musicians, you always had one guy who could shred up and down the guitar like there was no tomorrow, a guy with a great voice, and a solid rhythm section. I think they were just good musicians who got caught up in a very mediocre and over the top/cheesy music style. Bottom line, hair metal wins easily for me.

I choose hair metal. Nu metal disgusts me (for the most part). I do understand both sides of the spectrum however. Hair Metal was fun though, this new stuff irritates me. Whoever said something about elements of real metal in it, I don't see how. Maybe I'm listening to different nu metal than you are.

One of the best aspects of the hair metal bands for me was....even some of the shitty ones had players that were "once in a great band". For example, Mark Slaughter was in a band called XCURSION in the early 80s.... great stuff IMO, kinda early PRIEST/ RIOT sound. Wailing guitar solos.

Vivian Campbell from LEPPARD was in all kindsa great stuff like SWEET SAVAGE and early DIO. WHITSNAKE was like a dinosaur rock all-star game with Coverdale (PURPLE), Aynsley Dunbar (SANTANA...and a ton of other bands), etc.. Basically, the migration from classic rock to some of the hair stuff could be tracked to decent bands.

Seems like a lot of the guys in the nu metal bands that I've liked don't really come from anywhere. Like Serj from SOAD and the guys from THEORY OF A DEADMAN etc.. -- it's like they were all roadies for FAITH NO MORE or something and that's their background. Naturally, put that together with the lack of guitar solos, etc... it becomes more dismissable IMO.

Both genres are much too mainstream for my taste, but the hair stuff seemed to have firmer roots in the good stuff.
