Why isn't record player a proper name for it? It's far more intuitive than "turntable" at least.

A record player is what you played 'read alongs' on when you were 4 years old. A turntable is professional audio equipment (like the 1200s)

What are read alongs? Last time I checked a record player played back records.

Ever get those books that came with a 7" record? They were huge in the late 70s / early 80s. The record would 'read' the book to you, with a chime when it was time to turn the page. Everyone had a little plastic fischer-price record player back then.

I was born in 85 unfortunately. The books I read ( or heard ) used casettes. I remember the lion king theme song was a favourite .

what if you have an old stereo that has one on top, would you still call that a Turntable? Do your usual scratch artists such as Mix Master Mike, DJ Qbert or DJ Shadow go out there with big stereos or do they use what is a turntable, something I describe as a record player without any stereo components.

...and there's no reason to call me an idiot for my opinion. I just question yours, yet respect it. Were they called turntables before people started using them for scratching or to show off their talents? If so, I can agree with your statement, but if not, I would have a problem. I'm just basically saying that without the "scratching techniques" that are around today, it would still be called a record player.

and there wouldn't be turntablists

there's really no reason to argue about this anymore, let's talk about Ra
