ok here's my 2 cents: alternative, lik 'indie' is more a style and period of rock than an label status or position in the music industry. In short, alternative rock is what music, what almost every rock , folk and electronic band was called after 1991. However, much like punk-rock, as the style became mainstream, the actual state of being "alternative" (which suggests being underground, or having a cult audience) was no more. It was just a style, and everyone who played in the vein of grunge, or brit-pop, or trip-hop, or justa bout anything involving a guitar became "alt."
Also, i think of all of rock as being pop, so i don't make a disctinction between when a band gets popular and becomes "pop."

I dowloaded some of their music, and I must say....I love it! , It's kind of a funky tune, with a beautiful voice. This could really be one of my favourite's. Thanx Sammo

Especially with bands like that, you have to ask yourself "Alternative to what?" That's kinda the problem in figuring out what it means. Alternative became all the rage when it was the alternative to hair metal. I don't think that's really a viable definition anymore though.
