Question Bauhaus vs. Joy Division

All right, I don't think this needs too much explaination; the two bands who nearly single-handedly created post-punk and goth against one another, "verses" style. In terms of sound and spirit they were very closely matched, and were formed at nearly the same point in time, and both bands seased to be very early on in their careers...so who takes it? Who accomplished more in their breif careers? Who would you have preferred to have carried on? (( assuming Ian Curtis hadn't died and that New Order hand't been formed, of course )) Favorite albums? Discuss.

I quite like Joy Division (only have a best of though), but I don't know much about Bauhaus, so I consider it better not to vote

I like Joy Division quite a lot but prefer Bauhaus. Their album "In The Flat Field" has got to be one of the best albums to come out of that genre.

Besides, I used to hang out with a lot of art school weirdos who dressed in black.

I have to admit -- that would describe me pretty well...

And as for my pick, I would also go for Bauhaus -- their use of bizzare guitar texture, driving rhythms, and Peter Murphy's distinct vocal delivery really do it for me. Like you, I love Joy Division, but Bauhaus was darker, edgier and more metallic...and I like that.

Hard choice, but I'd have to go with Bauhaus. But then again, I know much more of their material so...

I knew there was a reason I like you.

Another difficult choice. I have to say, Joy Division are one of my all-time favourite bands, Closer and Unknown Pleasures are two magnificent albums, but my vote goes to Bauhaus. The were the first band I really loved, who sounded different from the norm, and I wouldn't be the music geek I am today without them.

I'm actually pleasently surprised here, I figured that Joy Division would walk away w/ this poll since they generally seem to be more popular/well known than Bauhaus, but I guess i was wrong!

I will go with Joy Divison. Bauhaus never really did much for me.

same here. im trying not to include in my judgement that bauhaus OWES they career to joy division's first album, but they and so many bands do. joy division really did reinvent the wheel for artrock the way i see it, and really the couple of bauhaus songs i like, one of them is the ziggy stardust cover, which isnt exactly 'genius at work.'
