so my ears are pretty much done ringing now.
'throw rag' epitomizes everything wrong with punk rock today. they're the kind of band that should be dragged out into the street and have their heads beaten in with rusty lead pipes. then again the band also included the singer from buckcherry and the guitar player from sugar ray. instead of being a pop-punk band they were one of those bands that believes screaming 'fuck' over and over again makes you cool, and acknowledging that you're a day over 16 makes you lame (regardless of how close or past 30 you really are).
the queens of the stone age however were FUCKING AWESOME. they started with 'someone's in the wolf' before kicking into 'the feel good hit of the summer' and 'the lost art of keeping a secret'. homme seemed to be having a lot of fun on stage too, dancing around quite a bit and cruising around all over the stage. it was pretty apparent that this was very much a show to try out the new songs in a live environment, and while they worked well they didn't really flow as much as the old ones, yet. speaking of old tunes i'd say at least half the set was old material, even a few from the self-titled debut. it was also really cool to hear the band jam out some of the old songs too, they added a good twist to a lot of old familiar tunes.
my only real complaint is that the vocals went to shit after about the 6th song (monsters in the parasol) and didn't really come back properly until the end. i couldn't tell if this was due to over-exertion on homme's part or a bad mic on his side of the stage. also some of the extended improved solos kind of killed the tune they were from. it was especially bad with 'no one knows' and another one near the end, it's not that the improv was bad, but they'd jam for as long as the song then kick back into the hook to finish it off. i remember sitting there a little surprised that they were still playing the same song instead of kicking into something new with an improvised interlude.
mark lanegan was also present for a few tunes but didn't really do anything besides stand there, that didn't stop him from sounding great on 'the hangin' tree' and any other song he sang on. mind you as soon as he was done singing he was off-stage again. dunno if he was sick or what, coincidentally the band was always permanently lit from the back while he was on-stage.
either way the show was great, i can't remember the order of the set list but they played the bulk of the new album along with:
the feel good hit of the summer
monsters in the parasol
the lost art of keeping a secret
i think i lost my headache
go with the flow
a song for the dead
the hanging tree
no one knows
you will know
regular john
avon
they also did a lanegan track as part of the encore, no idea what the name was. either way, the band was awesome - definitely worth checking out if you have the chance.
