I like his stuff, if I'm in the right kind of mood. You have to be in the mood for it.

About the weird instrumentals- I don't think that he uses much synthesizer, those are authentic instruments, they're just weird. It gives his stuff a unique sound, but that's also the reason why you have to be in the right kind of mood to enjoy his stuff. If he'd branch out a little and do something with more conventional instruments, he'd probably draw a larger audience.

Again, it's all in his style. If he doesn't want to write for the public- to write only what he feels, I respect that.
