i would suggest that you start with Autechre if you're willing to put in the time. everything else just branches off from there.

I heard that Autechre's music you have to really listen to to get the full effect of it. Is that what you meant by put in the time?

start with Autechre and it branches off from there? come on Steve, you have to be kidding me. For someone to start off with electronic music, I think Autechre is probably one of the worst choices because if they don't like the experimentations of what they have to offer, they might (as some feel about techno as well) stereotype it as very weird and unlistenable. Sorry, don't mean to go off on you there, just my personal opinion, as your opinion is the same. Since the guy is into NIN apparently, he may like Autechre, but I would say start off with Kenny Larkin's "Azimuth" or Speedy J's "A Shocking Hobby"

Right on. Especially Confield. I've listened to it many times and still haven't gotten the full effect. Perhaps, it's not actually there

well, i think it depends on what you start with. you could be drawn in with Tri-Repetae, Amber or Incunabula. they are far more accessible.

perhaps, but I wouldn't necessarily tell someone to "start" out with experimental or IDM. Just as anything else, I'd start them off with the basics or something that is even more accessible than autechre. No reason to argue over this simple mess, it's just a recommendation thread of many.
