Can (by far my favorite progressive band, and one of my favorite bands period)
King Crimson (necessity to check out)
Emerson, Lake and Palmer (kinda gay progressive style, but a lot of people like 'em)
Gentle Giant (sometimes inaccessible for the sheer point of it)
Jethro Tull (easiest progressive to 'get')
Soft Machine (uh very very hard to 'get' - and sometimes there's nothing there to get, but I like 'em anyway)
Yes (let the Reverand tell you about these guys 'cause I don't particularly like them)

Basically progressive music as I see it, is one where a band has immaculate mucisianship and uses this to push the boundaries of conventional rock n' roll. Sometimes something very enjoyable happens, often however it's dull, masturbatory and PRETENTIOUS. Not trying to dissuade you, because the bands above have enough great music worth checking out.
