Best of 1980s

Just picking through a few 80s artists, thought it would be cool to see who likes what.

A little overdone nowadays, but what the hey this doesn't cost me anything.

Edit: i don't know why i keep doing that. Anyway, if you vote for the stranglers, vote for both the choices

I was 15 in 1980 and a lot of that decade, especially the middle years, was a complete write-off for me musically, so I spent most of my time listening to '70s bands. In fact at one time I had a 'rule' about not buying anything released after 1979.

Looking back now I realise that there was a lot of good music around, although I still cringe when I think about the New Romantic period, but there were certainly bands that wouldn't be completely out of place in the indie movement we have today. Joy Division in particular is something that I've rediscovered, and even The Smiths, which at the time I thought was a lot of whiney, self-indulgent crap. Not that I'm rushing out to buy the new Morrissey album.

This is a multiple vote poll; that way it's fairer for other bands and we get to see what is REALLY popular...

Of the bands listed, I only voted for Tears For Fears. I thought they did two very strong albums, Songs From The Big Chair and Seeds Of Love. To me, Seeds Of Love was almost like a "Sgt. Pepper" for the 80s.

Unlike a lot of the folks here, I thought that 80s pop radio was far better than late 70s pop radio. There were a lot of great melodies, and the synths didn't bother me. I enjoyed the "fat" drum sounds as well. A lot of the music was really fun and quirky. And for the most part, you could still listen to it with children in the room (very unlike today).

Better albums came out in the 70s than in the 80s, but the 80s were a great time for singles, kind of like the 60s were. I "write off" a lot more of the 90s music than I do of the 80s, to be honest.

As for family friendly pop, there were exceptions. I notice that exactly 20 years ago Frankie Goes To Hollywood was in the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with Relax. It got banned by the BBC, which ensured it would be a success in Britain, but what happened in the US? Didn't everyone understand what they were singing about?

Well, I did in fact say "for the most part". But even "Relax" (which was about the raunchiest thing out there at the time) wasn't as blatant as so much of the stuff on pop radio these days. All these songs and raps with a full third of the lyrics "bleeped out" because of expletives...that just didn't happen in the 80s.
