From my experiance they work decently. But if your CD looks like someone took a sandblaster to it, there isn't much hope. Its not merical cream.

Those CD cleaner kits are exceptionally good... at scamming you out of 3 or 4 bucks. If there's shit on your CD's, run them under hot water, silver side up for a bit, then dry them with a soft rag. If scratches are your problem... then you've got yourself a nice little drink coaster!

When a CD is scratched or damaged, understand that information is -lost- and is not retrievable. CD cleaner kits claim that the information can be 'repaired' by reflecting the reading laser horizontal instead of up (hence not reading info) and then making it work, but all that will do is just maybe cover the gap.
If a CD ever skips in my car, i break it in half and toss it out the window. Do that with a purchased album.

Scratches are repairable to a degree. If they're deep enough to distroy the information on the disk, your dead in the water. But its not uncommon for a disk to skip due to a scratch that just causes the laser to read the disk incorrectly. That is about all those CD repair kits can do.

I saw on one of those household tips programmes that rubbing a little toothpaste on the scratch then leaving it for a few seconds and washing it off again works as well as those cd repair kits. Don't know if it works but just thought i'd share it.
