Post How to start out

I'm interested in making my own music by keyboard. I've been looking around and I've sort of decided to go with a workstation because I'm new to all this and I'm looking at Korg's Triton.

But, is there some place on the internet that can explain how to get started, what equipment is essential to make and record, etc?

I don't know anything about it. For example, the following text may as well be in heiroglyphics. I hope someone can help:

An unparalleled multi-effects system offers five stereo Insert Effects with 102 available algorithms, covering everything from traditional compressors, EQ, modulation and delay effects to wilder, innovative choices including Talking Modulator, Decimator (for getting a very nasty, lo-fi sound), 16-band Vocoder and more. Insert Effects can be chained together, modulated by realtime controls, MIDI messages, and synced to the tempo of your music.

Attack,

Thanks. I've got some thinking to do. I know, though, that I'm sticking with the PC because of economic reasons but I would love to have a Mac!

I would advise as an alternative, using a computer based MIDI/digital audio recording program.

And this connects to a synth or keyboard? I have a Yamaha keyboard I bought a couple of years ago - weighted 88 keys where the sound of it sounds more like a piano than my real piano - I guess it could be connected, right? I guess that's what the software does from there?

That would be much cheaper, to buy the software and a dedicated CPU, than buying a Triton, correct? Or am I not understanding?

Thanks!

BTW,

Why was this post placed in Promotion? I'm not trying to promote myself or a band.

Attack,

On the top of your head, do you know a cost breakdown of what you recommended?

Attack,

I'm looking at CPU Minimal Essentials. Would you verify or add to it?

Intel Celeron (don't think this will matter do you?) Processor 2.0GHz
128MB DDR SDRAM
60GBHD
48x/24x/48x CD-RW

okay.....
heiro-freakin-glificas in summery.

(An unparalleled multi-effects system offers five stereo Insert Effects with 102 available algorithms) = mathematical equations and overlays that the synth can handle, (covering everything from traditional compressors, EQ, modulation and delay effects) = okay...compressors = taking down the high end bringing up the low end changing the filters..i believe, EQ = okay,...not exactly effects but the way the tone is presented..by such things as sustain..how long the pitch and velocity hold for...decay...i can't exactly describe this with words. sorry...modulation (such things as phaser, flange, chorus, and ensemble..i'm sure the triton offers more than that...and if i have to explain delay, i think i'd have to slap ya ) to wilder, innovative choices including Talking Modulator = ..not exactly sure what this is...., Decimator....or this.... (for getting a very nasty, lo-fi sound), 16-band Vocoder (oh baby...i'm not sure where you found the 16 band vocoder but i didn't know a triton had one...either way, with a vocoder you can use the instrument or such wave patterns as pulse, sawtooth, wave, and triangle(i think that's what it's called) for the sound of your voice or actually anything..overlay sounds of instruments and more with wave patterns modulated over top to give a smooth electronic vibe to a piercing voice of static, noise and deathly wave tones. (and more. Insert Effects can be chained together, modulated by realtime controls = basically maybe 2 knobs and about 8-10 sliders...), (MIDI messages, and synced to the tempo of your music.)...on the poo side i don't know anything about midi and midi control...but i did manage to send the sounds from one synth to another using through...but that's another thing...

as for lookin at a triton...ouch man...that's quite a money shock for someone who just got into electronic instruments

try goin to a local music store and askin around for old gear and/or used gear
never know what you'll find

i started out on a korg poly 61...only about 300...probably could find it cheaper on ebay...not that i'm sayin get this synth...but you can find lots of great synths that are maybe a bit older. they suit beginners quite well...you can learn the basic functions of synthesis but still obtaining a piece of gear you'll be attached to for some length of time....that is unless this electronic music creation thing is just a fad. then i'd say ...uhh...buy a korg mono/poly...or maybe a moog liberation..and sell it to me for cheap.

Thanks Jay!

Yes, the Triton has a vocoder.

Thanks for your translation of the heiroglyphics! It makes more sense.

I'm thinking that Attack's recommendation (see posts above) may be the best way to go because I can upgrade at any time but after adding all the costs for equipment it's about as expensive as a Triton - but then a Triton isn't upgradable.

I guess it's one piece at a time. I'll take your recommendation and look at some used equipment but I want to be educated before I go in and the salesman educates me on how to lose my money.

also forgot some simple eq's such as release and attack.
release = when you let go of a key..it's how long the note stays...sorta like a hold button with decay.

attack = how long it takes for the sound to actually produce itself once you've touched a key (assuming it's not a touch sensitive key).
