I had never heard of that show, before I read about it on the sleeves of the records of B&S...

I certainly must check the Delays sometime, I've heard of their name before

No, I'm not French, I'm just old enough to remember British kids' TV when they used to show old black and white stuff from France like Belle & Sebastian, dubbed into English.

Yes, although to have been around to see Belle & Sebastian when it was new I think I'd need to be in my 40s. I think I was probably watching re-runs around the mid-70s.

i've been a big fan of nmh for about five years now and i don't think i've ever come across someone saying they like avery better...very surprising!

along this line, i'd suggest solo jeff mangum stuff. he does have one live recording out, and that's all for official releases (aside from the odd field music album...) but there are a lot of bootlegs of his live shows, which i'd definitely recommend. track them down if you like nmh (but...i would avoid live nmh shows for the casual listener)

Also, see if you can get some stuff by Kids These Days. I've been listening to the track 'about every 12 hours' off their album 'all these interruptions' over and over and over and over again.

If you like The Shins then you should be listening to Simon & Garfunkel. That's what they remind me of.

Delays (not The Delays) are a good group but I wouldn't relate them to The Shins in any way.

If you like The Shins then you might like Destroyer. Their albums vary a little bit in sound, I didn't really like Theif that much but City of Daughters is one of my favourite albums at the moment, Streethawk: A Seduction is also a damn fine album.
Be warned City of Daughters is VERY hard to find, it's worth the effort though.
Also you might want to check out some Pavement. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and Brighten the Corners are their most Shin-y albums I reckon.
NMH are brilliant, but they hardly sound like the Shins. Check out In The Aeroplane Over The Sea anyway, there's nothing quite like it.

How about Death Cab for Cutie? 'We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes' is my favorite. I would also recommend 'How it Feels to Be Something on' by Sunny Day Real Estate. Anything by Pinback would be a must. If you like darker indie then check out the Black Heart Procession (their first two albums, conveniently entitled 'the Black Heart Procession' and '2', are their best). Three Mile Pilot's 'Another Desert, Another Sea' is also very solid.

The Shins are good. I saw them a couple months ago with The Brunettes, it was a good show. "Oh, Inverted World" and "Chutes Too Narrow" are great CD's. They need to release a new album, though.
