Americana sounds don’t translate very well outside the United States? Atlanta-based Everett Young has changed all that with his second solo LP, "The Ground". The melodies, the arrangements and that voice entice you into a world you just don’t want to leave. It’s the realness of the music that makes it translate so well outside Young’s native America.
The Ground features songs which balance real instruments of strumming guitars, bass lines and piano sounds with subtle orchestrations added for more depth. The few concessions to modern studio sheen never detract from the songs. Effortlessly executed song/melody/hooks make for 11 very memorable tracks. The songs have been constructed piece by piece and then meticulously finished by a master craftsman.
This is the kind of LP you can listen to anywhere and anytime. It’s the kind of music that isn’t trying to be clever or tying to be anything at all…it just is. The songs are easy to relate to and easier to enjoy. This is what MOR / Americana pop ought to be.
An expressive performer, and a dynamo of a singer with a chameleon voice, Young more than delivers the goods. The songs range from big, power ballad, countrified pop ("Paid for the Trade" and "The Ground") to more intimate tracks (The wistful "If We Move to New York" and the deliciously subtle "You had it Made"). "Guess What Happened to Me" is nothing short of being devilishly funny. "Looser of the War" and "One Last Prayer" are smooth, lush little gems.
"The Ground" has begun receiving praise in the US and the UK for its quality and style. His UK and European tour in 2004 is eagerly anticipated.
Put it on, give it a spin and find the space between.
