And you prefer Amon Tobin's Jazzier stuff? I always thought that his last two records were more "unique" and better overall, but I guess that's just me..

the thing that impressed me was his soulful stuff as Wagon Christ around the same time, and he produced an album of this calibur of Drum n Bass. If you take the time frame of Mid-1997 and compare it to other albums that were coming out at the time, I highly doubt that any other album had much on it for it's style. It was highly complex Drum n bass, yet not drill n bass like squarepusher or today's Xanopticon and Venetian Snares, so yes, I really liked it that much. If you would've listened to it back when it was made, I think you would've found it highly unique and way above the albums at the time.
Yes, I like Tobin's much jazzier stuff because as I mentioned in the other paragraph, it was very unique for it's time. Squarepusher had been using the jazz/drill n bass formula for years, but Amon added a brazilian flare to it and made it less spastic and more melodic at times, especially with his release "permutation" which took a big band feel to it all. I agree, his last 2 albums have been quite different than the previous 2 (under Amon Tobin, he had an album called "Adventures in Foam" that sounded somewhat like his first 2 releases under the moniker Cujo in the mid 90's), giving a more spacey outlook, but still didn't like them near as much. It's about opinion, you know

hey, I trademarked that saying, so you betta watch it!
I would've mentioned Autechre's "Tri Repetae" instead, but I felt, as a full release, "LP5" was better, although "Tri" was the breaking ground for a lot of experimental music to be made.

Same for me...I just "enjoy" LP5 more than Tri Repetae, which I respect more...

or perhaps the ambient albums of Pete Namlook or the whole FAX label that tends to be overlooked.

I'm definantly with squarepusher at number two, I love that stuff. Brain bug is probobly one of the greatest songs out there period out of any genre IMO.

ahheheh....couple of weeks ago, i was just thinking about my very own electronic top10 of the 90s, and now this topic turns up.
still haven't figured out the list, but while i was pondering on it, it came to me that almost 90% of releases on that list would be after the '95.
hm.
not that it has to do with anything....
perhaps, i'll post my own list when everything falls in its place the right way.
list-freak, aye.
