Having seen METALLICA with Cliff a couple of times, I can attest to the fact that they were truly gods once.

Man that would have been awesome, i saw them on thier justice tour and I thought that was pretty awesome. Seeing them with cliff would have been unbelievable. Unfortunately I never got the chance to see them with cliff, he never toured Australia.

I guess my question to you is how much longer do you think metallica would have had to performing at say "master of puppets" quatlity for them to enter BS's status. Do you think that would have been possible? What if Cliff was still alive?

But, SABBATH is like the beginning and the end of all heavy music to me, so its hard for me to compare them.

Yep I can see how you could think that. I voted BS but if justice had better bass and the black album wasn't hijacked and susequently destroyed by Bob Rock I think I could have voted metallica.

This is fairly simple: I have a great personal dislike of Metallica...and yet I love Sabbath...end of story...

Oh this is hard. I love black sabbath, but I can only listen to them for a short time for some reason. I'd say Metallica, definately, because I spend more time listening to them. I still love Sabbath though O.o

I like Tanjello. Esp for that last quote.

To answer your question, I'm not sure. Cliff had quite an ear for melodic stuff, but at the same time...it always seemed to me that they kinda "forgot how to write songs" after he died. The parts to all the albums with Cliff fit together so well, no matter how radical the changes. For example, check out "The Four Horsemen". With all the changes in that song, there's never a time (at least for me) that it sounds "forced together" or really, anything less than seamless and classic. A lot of the stuff after that, esp. on "Justice" like the title track, and some others on it, sounded like they crammed a bunch of riffs together, the songs just didn't flow. Then they enrolled in the school of Bob Rock, and he rewired their songwriting kinda his way.

Regardless of speculation, the fact is...most people don't question the boys work with Cliff. As soon as he died, the crowd divides on what is good and what is not. They lost me for sure with the "Justice" album. I loved the tour, but never liked anything after "Master...", really.

Seeing them on the Puppets tour was incredible. They were so focused and driven. When that curtain went up, they were gonna tear the roof off. And they did.

Black Sabbath pretty much created the genre of metal, but Metallica has done a lot better than Sabbath. Sabbath had like 4 good albums then Ozzy left and the band went nowhere after that. Metallica's done alright for themselves after 20 years.

Sabbath just because I hate St. Anger

Sabbath for sure. In my opinion Metalica is no comparison to Sabbath. Metalica was great in the beginning but didn't stop when it was over(St. Anger). but Sabbath will always be great.

they are really odd... 20 years between them. their music is insanely different. but black sabbath just get it. the music is melodious... yet hard... and addictive. they are pioneers. you have to respect that. but metallica are just THERE. even though they are great, and basically spawned from black sabbath, i'd have to say they don't really compare in many respects. plus they really screwed up.
