Okay bad religion is winning, I am surprised, i have not heard people praising them much on RM.
Are you people who are voting for them based on their early releases (suffer, no control etc) or are you into their more recent stuff (ie post generator stuff).
have you heard much of their new album. I have not heard it but a mate of mine thinks it is quite good. It is great that Mr Brett is back with the band, he was one of the key members and I think that his absence was one of the reasons that the bands mid/late 90's releases were not so good. Any thoughts anybody?

Well my knowledge is limited but I'll make my descion based on what I know.
As far as Black Flag goes I did not pick them. Their easily in my top 5 best punk bands ever, but defintley not at the top (Their probably also the band I've listened to the most on this list also). I just don't feel as if their qualities really outshine any other bands. They play good, quality, raw punk rock but it just isn't the best as far as I'm concerned.
The Misfits I feel pretty much the same way about. Their defintley top 5 or 10 for myself, but just not the best. The Misfits do have one thing that drags them down, the repitiveness of their music. I like what they do, but it's just not the best in my eyes.
The Dead Kennedys are a great band with thoughtful songs. Jello is a great frontman and gives the band a distinct voice and a certain personality. Unfortunately Jello isn't enough to make them the best and when I look at their career as a whole, I'm unimpressed. Another great band that just doesn't stand out in my mind as #1.
Bad Brains is a great band that combines many different types of music. I think the thing that is really effecting my desicion with them is I had never heard them until I discovered them at Radiomute. Defintley a great band but never got into them as much as I could have.
Minor Threat, The Circle Jerks, and Bad Religion just don't cut it for me. I can't say I got into any of them as much as the bands I've discussed already so they will not be getting my vote.
This leaves the Ramones. This really was a process I went about by elimination and when I got to the Ramones I felt as if they really deserve the number one spot. I feel as if their pop punk combination really made for a wider audience appeal. The Ramones were able to appeal to a large crowd, but still be deemed punk because of the nature of their music. Aside from the success I think their music is original, although repitive at times, and really is just catchy riff's backed by great lyrics. To be honest I'm not really sure who pioneered pop-punk, but the Ramones defintley did a great job at it. They are not the band I listened to the most on this list, but nonetheless a great band.
Great idea for a thread Tanjello since I really went about the question throughly. I don't have time to read over this now so excuse me if it just seems like I'm throwing ideas at you, I'm in a rush at the moment.

I think Operation Ivy is a much better candidate if Rancid we're considering being put as an option.

Rancid are okay, I don't think they come close to any of these bands. Anyway, they are hardly early influential US punk so I don't think they belong in this poll.

Good points, I'm still with the DK though I was never that much into the Ramones for some reason.
