Music of 2000-2004
I'm working on a project where I must select 4 songs from the time period of 2000-2004, where the lyrics represent these years. I'm having a tough time thinking of some songs, maybe someone could help suggest something for me. I'm not looking for a specific genre, if you have an idea of something which might speak for these years please suggest it, if you don't have the lyrics I can find them. Thanks in advance.

Morrissey - America Is Not The World [from You Are The Quarry- 2004]
America, your head's too big,
Because America, your belly's too big,
And I love you- I just wish you'd stay where you is,
In America, The land of the free, they said,
And of opportunity, In a just and a truthful way,
But where the president, Is never black, female or gay,
And until that day you’ve got nothing to say to me
to help me believe,
In America, It brought you the hamburger,
Well America, you know where you can shove your hamburger,
And don't you wonder why in Estonia they say,
"Hey you, big fat pig,
you fat pig, you fat pig"?
Steely blue eyes with no love in them scan the world,
And a humourless smile with no warmth within greets the world,
And I, I have got nothing to offer you,
No-no-no-no-no,
Just this heart deep and true
which you say you don't need,
See with your eyes, touch with your hands, please,
Hear through your ears, know in your soul, please,
For haven't you me with you now?
And I love you, I love you, I love you,
And I love you, I love you, I love you...

Can you cheat a bit? Blurs "Girls and Boys" was a good picture of the decline of meaningful relationships in the 90s and 00s, but its from sort of '97 or earlier i think.

"Rockin' The Suburbs" by Ben Folds.
...I'm rockin' the suburbs
Just like Michael Jackson did
I'm rockin' the suburbs
Except that he was talented
I'm rockin' the suburbs
I take the checks and face the facts
That some producer with computers
Fixes all my shitty tracks...

Radiohead - Idioteque [from Kid A- 2000]
Who's in a bunker? Who's in a bunker?
Women and children first,
and the children first and the children...
I laughed untill my head came off,
I swallowed till I burst,
until I burst, until I...
Who's in a bunker? Who's in a bunker?
I have seen too much,
you haven't enough, you haven't seen it...
I laughed untill my head came off,
Women and children first,
and children first and children...
Here I'm allowed everything all of the time,
Here I'm allowed everything all of the time,
Ice-age comin, ice-age comin,
Let me hear both sides,
let me hear both sides, let me hear both...
Ice-age comin, ice-age comin,
Throw it on the fire,
throw it on the fire, throw it on...
We're not scaremongering,
this is really happening! Happening!
We're not scaremongering,
this is really happening! Happening!
Mobiles squirkin, mobiles chirpin,
Take the money and run!
Take the money and run! Take The money!
Here I'm allowed everything all of the time,
Here I'm allowed everything all of the time,
Here I'm alive- everything all of the time,
Here I'm alive- everything all of the time,
The first of the children,
The first of the children...

There's a country song about the 911 attack where the plane went down in the feild, it's nothing very special, so i doubt it'll come to your final 4, but it's worth a look, I don't know why but I always found it touching. It's Kristy Jackson - Little Did She Know
It's about how this lady said goodbye to her husband as he went for a plane trip and he ended up helping bring the plane down before it hit anything important and how he's a hero and stuff. Maybe it's just my girly side

I guess it's not really country, but it gives me that impression. So nevermind about the country part, it was just an opinion

*New Years Day - U2 !*
Yeah...
All is quiet on New Year's Day
A world in white gets underway
I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes on New Year's Day
On New Year's Day
I will be with you again
I will be with you again
Under a blood red sky
A crowd has gathered in black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspapers says, says
Say it's true it's true...
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one
I...I will begin again
I...I will begin again
Oh...
Maybe the time is right
Oh...maybe tonight...
I will be with you again
I will be with you again
And so we're told this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage
Though I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes
On New Year's Day
On New Year's Day
