I say it's unfortunate that they spilt mostly because it's such a new sound to me. That is, it sounds like messy heavy rock, and it is, but it's also really creative and you can tell that the music's been put together with thought, its not just random chaos.

I haven't actually heard much of the Mars Volta or Sparta, only one or two tracks from each, so I can't really say if the split was really a bad thing, but I'm that sure neither of the two bands replace ATDI, even if it may seem that they surpass it.

Well... what about Hopesfall, Codeseven, Glassjaw, Neil Perry, Kaospilot, Norma Jean, Botch, HORSE the Band(<---do check them out, really cool, console music + hardcore), Coheed and Cambria, Envy, Cave In, King ly Chee, Converge...

While ATDI is undeniably good, its definitely not a new sound

Ah.
It might be that ATDI were a new sounds to me because I've never heard of any of those bands you've just mentioned...

What is the sound all those bands share?
Do all of those bands come to mind when you hear ATDI?

I've only heard Relationship of Command and I really enjoy it. What would be the next album to pick up?

In the end, what we have are these little, great moments. They come and they go. That's as good as it gets. But, still, isn't that great?

Wink

At the Drive-In has to be one of my favorites, if not the root of some of my favorite bands such as
Crime In Choir: an amazing progressive/instrumental/rock band that Kenny Hopper started (bassist from the album "Alfaro, Vive Carajo!").
Sparta: a very good post-rock band that Jim Ward, Paul Hinojos(who went on to join The Mars Volta), and Tony Hajjar.
The Mars Volta: an incredible progressive/experimental/rock band started by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala.
De Facto: A dub band that ended once it's co-founder Jeremy Ward died of a drug overdose.
Free Moral Agents: another Dub/Psychedelic band involving Isaiah "Ikey" Owens (keyboardist from the Mars Volta).

I personally think that it was a good decision for them to split, not because they were getting worse, but because those other bands are all incredible. My favorite albums by them would have to be Acrobatic Tenement, El Gran Orgo [ep], and Vaya [ep], even though all of their albums are great.
And...thats my two cents, but since I've been rambling on and on, interest has probably accumlated to about 6 or 7 cents.
