i thought it was more because they wanted to make an entire experimental album dedicated to their friend, instead of just that one song ATDI did

The Decemberists. I picked up their newest album after that "Decemberists vs Beatles" thread and, while quite not up to Beatles par, they are a very quirky yet highly talented band.

At the Drive-In split up because half the band wanted fame (Sparta) and the rest just wanted to do the music (The Mars Volta).

Califone; now there are maybe too many nice sounding indie bands out there but I've never heard a classier and more restrained act than them. Highly Reccomended. Album to check out would be Quicksand/Cradlesnakes.

I think the Chocloate Watchband needs more attention... They were quite a unique Stones rip off garage band and also a very melodic studio psychedelic band... Two bands in one really...
