Great post by panbient

and lastly i think 'modern' punk should be distinguished from old punk music... they're different styles meant for different listeners... most fans of one don't like the other and again that's fine... but if you walked up to most mtv punk fans and asked them what 'holiday in cambodia' was about i'm willing to bet that most of them would reply with a dumb look and 'um... spring break?' and that's sad

That deserves it's own thread, couldn't reply because it was closed. He's right in every way, he makes me not lose hope in the world . dead kennedys btw.

great post.

i tried to argue almost the exact same thing on another forum, and believe me, it was hard. i said that the idea of punk was to be something different to open ppls eyes and that what it stood for then was bound to die from the start because, after a couple years punk bands wouldn;t be doing something different, theyd just be doing what other punk bands did, and to follow a crowd is against the entire idea, and therefore not punk. "old" punk only ever had about a decade of possible life. not to say that punk music now isn't punk...its just not really the idea of punk.
im not sure i said that alright. anyways, i couldnt agree more with panbient

Then you have to define "punk" as either a way of thinking or a musical genre. The modern stuff can copy the style of the old stuff, sure, but the message is way different.

exactly. punk was originally a mentality...not a musical genre.

well i think the mentality and message go hand in hand. they were both to be aware of what's going on around you/in the world and not to submit to shit you dont agree with, no?
