I think part of the difficulty in voting here is the broad range of styles covered...calling everyone in this group of guitarists "Avant-Garde" pretty much guarantees that no two artists will be very much alike (for the most part)...which means that, more than anything else, this thread is about which of these guitarists' work you respect the most, that is, in a way, "Avant-Garde" to the Avant-Garde.

Well, since we have a some votes now, would anyone like to share what they consider to be the "Greatest Avant-Garde Guitar Album?" As in, a work by a known avant-garde guitarist that prominantly features their guitar work that you particularly enjoy...

...I'll post my selection after some thought (( and when time allows ))...

Do you think you have the quorum?

OK, I'll start, even if I feel ignorant and I have voted "Other".

I'll say Al Di Meola, Flesh on flesh album. But, ..., not necessarily for the guitar playing,
though he is quite a master, but for the compositions and arrangements.

He classify himself in the Jazz fusion category. But for me he does a music that fit perfectly with
all I think about music. Rhythm, melody, virtuosity without glamour, expression and
sensibility.

my problem with these lists is that I end up voting for the people I know best.
so, that'll be fred frith cause he does so many things I like.

Sharp and Kaiser are big faves too but I think Frith really is a Giant Supermarket of interesting things to do with a guitar. skittery jiggery pokery to big melodic lines and crunchy riffs. I think he's really swell.

Having said that, I used to be pretty crazy about Kaiser and to a lesser degree Sharp. Kaiser makes with the skittery to a really beautiful degree. Sharp I liked cause he was so unpredictable also a really ballsy approach.

special mention to Dr. Chadbourne.
He'll get my vote when we do our 'Electric Birdcage' poll.
seriously though his Willie Nelson/Jimi Hendrix hybrid is actually pretty amazing especially when everything goes dreadfully wrong

I would just like to ask Seba Aethiad: Would you consider Robert Fripp an avant garde guitarist?

Are you talking about the original definition or what is now considered avant-garde?

Well, by today's standards, no...but as far as 1960s/1970s rock guitar is concerned, he's more avant-garde than most...he wouldn't traditionally be considered as such, but if nothing else, his purely improvisational works w/ Crimson could very well be considered avant-garde...so if you feel like mentioning him, feel free...
