William Henry Webb aka Chick Webb had Spinal Tuberculosis, which led to his being under 5 feet tall, but he was still a monster behind the drum kit. He was one of Buddy Rich's biggest influences. He was only 34, when he died.

In 1937 in one of many Battle of the Bands, Chick Webb's band, cut wide open Benny Goodman's band with Gene Krupa on drums.

Now if you watched Ken Burns' Gumbo you would have heard this, the only problem with that, would be, it wasn't recorded.

To also continue the "White Man Can't Swing" theme, they used one of the dullest Goodman recordings, they could find, to compare against the Webb recording.

Say, does Roscoe Mitchell still play live, specifically over in my area? That would be a great show.

He's only 65, well at least for another month. So yes, he still plays live and is still a force of nature. He and the AEC generally stick to Europe.
