The Kinks
What do you people think of the Kinks?
I want opinions, please... they are a great band in my opinion and I enjoy their sense of humour in songs such as "Lola".

Poor Kinks. Their threads move to the bottom so fast, but I'm here to prop them up. The Kinks rule, they are my 3rd favorite band behind The Who and The Beatles. Not many people would rank them that high; even people that love them usually put them top 10 or so. Ray Davies' heart and humor comes through nearly all their tunes. Defenitely a genuine band.

I love the Kinks... They are one of my top five favorite bands (I am noticing that Barely Legal has similar tastes to mine,, that is cool)...
Anywho, General Electric is correct that their threads seem to die off quick as they don't create much controversy (people either love them or have little to say that is negative about them)...
Here is a link to another thread about the GREAT band,, The Kinks.

I love the Kinks. I think they do get overlooked a lot when people talk about great bands. They don't stir up much controversy either so they do tend to be put in the background a lot. I think they're better than Led Zeppelin or the Who even.

They have an awesome and complex body of work.
I've never fully appreciated "Muswell Hillbillies" til pretty recently. The 'Salvation Army' arrangements used to bother me. Now, I think they are brilliant and perfect for the songs that use them.
That's the thing about the Kinks. Craft.
Sure, people can hold up their disposable lighters at their concerts but there is a strong sense of Craft and Tradition in their work that is unique in Rock and Roll and will always be singled out in threads that burn out a little too fast.

I love the Dave Davies story about him slashing his guitar speakers to get the distortion sound on You Really Got Me. He used to turn up to gigs with this shitty amplifier and people thought he was nuts.
It really pissed me off when Jimmy Page tried to claim that it was him playing on those early Kinks songs. And i believe it pissed D Davies of too..

Well stated... And most don't even know of the unique ground (for a rock band) that they covered... Their music seemed very "honest" and pure, if that makes sense...
Many only know of their early hits and their early 70's stuff gets no airplay (except for Lola)... Their 70's work is really important...

I've said it before, I'll say it again, The Kinks are one the best kept secrets in all of classic rock. Sure, everyone has heard of them and their singles, but these guys put out four or five classic albums in a row in the late sixties/early seventies (Something Else By The Kinks, The Village Green Preservation Society, Arthur, Lola vs. the Powerman & the Money-Go-Round, Pt. 1, Muswell Hillbillies). This was a very creative period for a very underrated creative band.

Good call. I've got all of those albums and they're definitely the best of the best!
