Question What Is Tri Hop?

Well I was talking to my friends step dad about industrial types if music (NIN, KMFDM, Skinny Puupy, etc.) and he asked if I like hip hop, and I said "Well I like a lot of the beats but I hate most mainstream artists." He replied " You should try some Tri Hop, Its kind of like Hip Hop intermeshed with electronica." then the subject changed and I was left curious. What is Tri Hop? Am I getting words mixed up and thinking of Trip Hop? I know this is related hip hop, but since its supposedly really dark and electronical, I figured I could get a better definition here. Any replies will be appreciated!

I think he's the one getting words mixed up. Sounds like he is talking about trip hop to me.

Yes he's talking about trip-hop, but thats no reason for you to start listening to trip-hop.

...

Let's move this thread right along:

"Portishead's Dummy is the best trip-hop album... Portishead, like, invented trip-hop or summun"

"I really really like Massive Attack's Blue Lines... Massive attack didnt have whiny Beth Gibbons but they still, like, um... were like the first trip-hop 'band'"

"Sometimes when I listen to Morcheeba I start thinking, about like, um... how Morcheeba is souuuuuue super-talented and I love the fact that they invented trip-hop"

"Lamb are like trip-hop gods... They really innovated it by being the first trip-hop group. The way they mix the vocals with the hip-hop beat... WOW I heart them, like, so f'ing much"

"I dont really consider Dj Shadow to be a trip-hop artist"

"Who's Ninja Tunes?

I always wondered why Acid Jazz died and Trip-Hop thrived. Seems like it should have been the other way around.

You should try Ninja Cuts: Flexistensialism on the Ninja Tune label if you want a great inroduction to hip hop based Trip Hop.

Tricky is a another good trip hop artist who originally came from Massive Attack. I Like his dark style and really rough and distinct voice.

I just got Lamb's newest and love it. I actually got the new Massive Attack not long ago too and it has not left my CD changer since I bought it. Its a little different from previous stuff and very artistic... great for chillin' out.
