The Byrds

What's everybody's opinion of the band the Byrds? I think they're awesome but I unfortunately don't know all of their music.

What do you think of them?

I love 'em. "Turn!Turn!Turn!" is one of my favorite all time records. Uncouth & uncool though it be, I'd get their "greatest hits". Jim/Roger McGuinn was a great 12 string man.

Yeah, I borrowed the CD "Full Flyte: 1965-1970" by the Byrds, from my friend. She's into all the 60's-70's music and I love her taste.
That's a really good 'greatest hits' album if you are looking for one.

I think my favourite songs by the Byrds are:
-It won't be wrong
-Turn! Turn! Turn!
-Mr Tambourine Man
-Renaissance fair
-All I really want to do
-Have you seen her face
-Mr Spaceman
-5D (fifth dimension)
-Chimes of freedom
-She don't care about time
-Feel a whole lot better
-Eight miles high

Hmmm, probably not even all of my favourites, but you get the idea. I love them, although I dont know a lot about the band.
I don't yet have my own copy of their greatest hits album, but I am getting one soon, probably the "Full Flyte" album, cos I love that and it has all of those songs I listed above, except for "it won't be wrong". But Dad has that on a record, so it's all good.

Well, the Byrds are truly one of those bands whose influence and importance cannot be overstated. I have always loved their early work in particular. Most of the songs listed in the above post are also among my favorites.

I too love the Byrds and have always been really upset that, for the most part, only Turn Turn Turn and Mr. Tamourine Man are the only tunes you hear of theirs on the radio... Well, I once in a blue moon hear If You Wanna Be a RocknRoll Star...

I really love their early folk rock and psychedelic folk rock... I never really liked the country rock stuff, but to be honest I only listened to it briefly back 15 years ago, so I need to give it another chance down the road...

In my mind though (just based on their first several albums) they are among the 50 greatest bands in the history of rock music and maybe even top 30...

Really cool band that I've been meaning to become more familiar with. I dunno, maybe it's something inherent about the Byrds that keeps them underappreciated, but everytime I want to listen to them I forget or change my mind and listen to something else. Maybe one day I'll really sit down and give them my attention and I can give a more descriptive opinion of them.

I used to prefer the l.p. 5th Dimension to everything else they did by a wide margin.
Not anymore. I got a friend the Box set as a gift and I was taken aback by what a strong whole it was. These days I'm finding the stuff they did RIGHT after Crosby left to be pretty damned strong.

What a sound. good songs and a love of Traditional American music that had a strong effect on listeners. Maybe not "Music from the Big Pink" but I think a similar effect.

Still got a soft spot for their Psychedelic period though. 8 miles high (and 5D as a whole) has a really great feel to it.

I was introduced to the Byrds by my hippie art teacher and since then I've become a pretty big fan. They're definitely not in my "top ten" bands, but they're good to listen to when you want to relax and just let the record spin.
