Didn't get into the Byrds until about ten years ago. Since then I've discovered they're a lot more than the four or five songs you hear on the radio as Syd pointed out.
Their psychedelic period was the best I thought and over all they're definitely one of the greatest bands in rock history.

Yes, I am reviving this thread that is nearly three years old. HOLY CRAP.
Anyway, I've been listening to The Notorious Byrd Brothers a whole lot lately. Every time I see one of their albums for cheap I usually pick it up with the reasoning that "I liked the last one I got well enough, I guess..."
Now I have four of their albums and going over them again I've realized what a great band this really is. I read somewhere that The Byrds are one of those bands that sort of creeps into the back of your mind without making much of an impression, but once they get ahold of you, they really get ahold of you. I couldn't agree more.

later byrds
what does everyone think of the byrds later music like sweetheart of the rodeo, the ballad of easy rider and the double album, untitled/unissued. this music never really gets much attention when the music of the byrds is brought up, specifically the last two albums i mentioned.

I have tried to get into the Bryds country rock and so far (20 years trying) it just doesn't do all that much for me. There are of course a few individual songs I like, but as a whole I dig their psychedelic tinged music best.

"Sweetheart of the Rodeo" probably gets the most plays around my household. Just about all their stuff through 72 ranges from worth having to excellent. I also dig the DILLARD AND CLARK stuff with its country vibe.

I would have to agree with Psychedelic Syd on the Byrds country-rock albums. i own sweetheart of the rodeo and have heard material from the other ones but it just doesnt do much for me. i think the byrds last really great album was the notorious byrd brothers. if im going to listen to country-rock sort of things id much rather the band or the grateful dead or dylan. i think the byrds best work was there folk and psychedelic rock

It took me a while to get into their country-rock period too. I got there after having listened to Gram Parsons - the CD with his albums GP / Grievous Angel should be in everyone's collection. Honestly, even if you don't like country music it could surprise you!
Anyway, his work as a Byrd on Sweetheart Of The Rodeo was what led me to that album, even after I'd had copies of the earlier Byrds albums for years. Of those, Younger Than Yesterday has always been a favourite, but there are great tunes on all the others too. A really important band.
