I'm not a huge fan of David Byrne the artist, but I am a very big fan of David Byrne the musicologist. His work in the cause of alerting the U.S. audience to the importance and greatness of South American music was responsible for making me into a fan of that music, and for that I am very grateful.

As for his own music, he has been very influenced by the international music he has studied and promoted through his Luaka Bop record label. His music has ended up being a hybrid of the edgy alternative sound of Talking Heads mixed with various kinds of international music (mostly Latin American styles).

Some of the stuff I've heard from him as a solo artist has been very impressive, while other things I haven't been that blown away by. Regardless of that, he is a very respectable talent, and if you dig what you're hearing tonight, you might want to check out some of his albums.

Love David Byrne. The man is a genius. From his work with Talking Heads to his Oscar winning "Last Emperor" soundtrack with Ryuchi Sakamoto, the man is awesome. His work with Brian Eno was exceptional too. "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" is definitely worth checking out.

I've got Uh-Oh and Rei Momo by him and love both. Not sure how you classify his solo music but I've heard him catagorized as "World Beat" or something. Whatever it is, it's very good.

I believe David Byrne has a new album out now too. Knowing you're a fan, MD, I was just wondering if you've heard it and if you have what do you think? I've got Uh-Oh but didn't really care for Rei Momo.

Yep, heard Byrne has a new one out called "Grown Backwards." Haven't heard it yet. It's on my list. I have a lot of music I have to sort through so it takes a while. Will let you know when I hear it.

I heard most of his new one at the Starbucks the other day.
It sounds a little on the 'back to the basics' side and the Latin flavor is present but not up front.

I have very mixed feelings about David Byrne.

Mainly, I'm afraid I hold his solo discs up to The Talking Heads at their best. For me, only "songs from the Catherine Wheel" can withstand this test. I have and enjoy "Uh-Oh" which I think makes the musical statement: "Hey! Remember me? It's me! David Byrne! The Talking Heads Guy!!!!"
It's good. A good collection of good songs with good sounds and a GREAT cover. It's still no Talking Heads record.

Also worth mentioning: some of his records have some of the most outstanding Fidelity I've put in my earholes. "Look into the Eyeball" and "Feelings", while mixed bags sound as great as anything I've heard. the sound really jumps out at you.

If you don't know already, He's done a bunch of vocals for electronic tracks:

X-Press-2 ft. David Byrne - Lazy
Thievery Corporation ft. David Byrne - Dance on Vaseline

Just heard Byrne's Grown Backwards. Not bad. Not his best stuff, either though. Gotta agree with Digger about his solo work. Catherine Wheel is the only thing that meets up with the Talking Heads standard.
