after i snagged a bunch of jazz records from my dad i lent him a few cds of current stuff i liked... 'uninvisible' by modeski martin & wood and 'permutations' by amon tobin...

he found MMW to be boring and predictable with their approach... but he thought permutations was great... he couldn't get over the fact that it was all done by one guy... he described it as one crazy long drum solo where the drums were never the focus of the music...

his reaction was pretty much the polar opposite of what i was expecting... but that's not a bad thing either...

My parents aren't really into Jazz at all, while I am quite a bit...they like Hard Bop records from Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, etc...but when I pull out the Lacy or Brotzmann they really freak out!

...although they don't mind some of the more avant-leaning works by Jaco Pastorious, if only for the funky bass...

We should have a thread for music our parents hate!

Every single song I have ever played for my Mother, she's liked, especially when they were my own. And surprisingly, I was playing a song by Radiohead for my Dad one day, and he enjoyed it. It blew me away,

My dad always steals my Styx greatest hits cd, as well as my two disc Kansas set. He and I actually share a decent amount of musical taste. We both like Boston, the Eagles, Foreigner, Neil Diamond, Moody Blues, and ABBA. He sure doesn't like the heavy metal though.

My dad dislikes almost any music I put on, it's always too loud and he likes silence...
If my mum is downstairs I usually play something rather quiet and melodious or folk, she usually appreciates that, but last night I played Explosions In The Sky and she liked that...
And I think she quite liked Tool as well, which amazed me a lot... She doesn't like the Pixies though, way too chaotic, she says...
