Wow, you have the same problem as I do... even though my collection is about 1/10 of yours...

Part of Zappa's aim was to repel. His musical approach was dadaistic, kinda like theater of the absurd.

Not all of his work is like that...in fact, those albums were probably some of his weakest work (attempting to tap into a more popular market)...his '60s albums like Uncle Meat, Absolutely Free and We're Only In It For The Money were some of the most experimental rock music ever made and focused more on social commentary than comedy (although there were elements of that, obviously) Hot Rats was his solo Jazz-Rock album of that era...it's probably one of the best of that genre, actually...but I'll agree, it's not "typical" Zappa...if there is such a thing..

Well, yes, of course -- Zappa's aim was to repel the mundane, conventional music listeners and make music to be embraced by "freaks", and did a miraculous job of it...for that matter, he was probably the first rock musician to sucessfully merge Rock & Roll w/ classical ambition and avant-garde experimentalism...he was a genius...

...and I find his music anything but "repelling"...He's probably my favorite "rock" artist of all time.

Yeah, I'm a fan..but many of his pieces are exquisitely repellant!

Yeah, absolutely. Andy Kauffman,I think, was trying to do the same type thing with comedy that Zappa did with music when he did some of those bits that were designed to run people out of the theater or get angry. He was trying to get a different response than the audience bargained for.

The live jazz recording thread makes my realize I need to rearrange my rearranged list in this thread.

But that will have to wait until tomorrow or so.
