To answer the question. No it's neither Jazz, avant or free jazz. But it does have elements of Jazz and Fusion included. It's what people sometimes call Jazz-Rock. But there is no improvising involved so it's more rock.

and am I alone in finding it boring?

You didn't ask what I specifically thought of it. You asked if you were the only one to find it boring.

I happen to enjoy it.

I thought it was clear what I was aiming at...

Ok after thinking it over a bit more, here is an updated and slightly rearranged list. Still keeping it to one per musician, which actually complicates this a lot.

Yes, I know I should be expecting a class action suit because this has now expanded to 21.

John Coltrane - Ascension
Cecil Taylor - Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come
Cecil Taylor - One Too Many Salty Swift & Not Goodbye
Evan Parker - 50th Birthday Concert
Albert Ayler - Spiritual Unity
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint & the Sinner Lady
Peter Brotzmann - Little Birds Have Fast Hearts Vol. 1 & 2
Anthony Braxton - Willisau (Quartet) 1991
Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch
Ganelin Trio - Ancora Da Capo
Charles Gayle - Touchin' on Trane
Steve Lacy - Morning Joy
Horace Taspcott - The Dark Tree Vol. 1 & 2
Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz
Alexander Schlippenbach - Pakistani Pomade
Fred Anderson - Two Days in April
Sun Ra - Jazz in Silhouette
Jimmy Giuffre - Free Fall
David S. Ware - Godspelized
Vienna Art Orchestra - The Minimalism of Erik Satie
Joe Maneri - Coming Down the Mountain
John Law - Exploded on Impact

Now if we were to go by the original meaning of avant-garde my first choice would be Satchmo’s Hot Five and Sevens recordings.

Man, Orpheus...Zappa boring? I don't think I could EVER associate Zappa w/ that word, lol...I love Hot Rats; fantastic proto-fusion/jazz-rock...
