Music Themed Games (I.E. - DDR, Beatmania IIDX, Pop n' Music, etc.)

Why hello thar, TehWhack here. I've come bearing a question and an opinion. Recently, a new rising genre of video games has been becoming more a more popular, especially in the last year. This would be the music genre of games. The guidelines to being a "music" genre game would basically have the game's levels/stages/activities based on doing an action that goes with the music. At the moment, the company Bemani is dominating this category.

Some examples of games the fit into the music genre are:

- Dance Dance Revolution
- Beatmania IIDX
- Guitar Freaks
- Drum Mania
- Keyboard Mania
- Pump It Up
- Pop n' Music
- Samba De Amigo
- Para Para Paradise
- Dance Maniax
- EZ2Dancer
- Mambo a Go Go
- Step Mania
- Frequency
- Parapa the Rapper

I honestly think this is a great genre of games, and it's one of my favorites. I think Bemani has done a great job releasing all these games, because people seem to be playing them quite a bit. It's probably one of the best things to happen to video games too. Doing the dancing games is one of the best diets out there also; it allows you to do cardio workouts while having fun. If you don't believe me, just try to play it and you'll see that the dancing games are much harder than they look (a long with being physically tough).

Personally, my favorite series would be DDR, Pop n' Music, and StepMania. Anyways, what do you guys think of this? Do you enjoy playing music games? If so what kinds?

Oh yeah, if you have any questions on this, I'd be happy to answer. I think I have a decent knowledge on this.

C'mon, no one plays music games here? I'd suspect at least a couple here considering this is a music forum

Anyways, you may have heard that some countries are considering DDR an official sport (I believe Iceland is one of them). I think this is appropriate, but another story is people who want to make it an OLYMPIC sport.

Well... I agree with just being a sport, but being in the olympics? Definately not. It basically defies what the olypics are. I believe the olympics where intended to be man vs. man and natural material were used as needed. Inquiring Electronics into olypics don't fit.

DDR as an olympic sport is one of the wrongest things i've heard of in a long time... why not replace tae kwon do with street fighter 2? ... personally the only music games i played were parrapa the rapper and um jammer lammy (both on playstation)... top notch games loads of fun... i'd really like to try samba de amigo but only if i had the special controller (marraccas)

I think they're ok. I once fell down on a DDR machine and got a high score. Oh man I was drunk. But they're alright. I like wideogame music though. Like Megaman, what awesome songs in that. I found a site with crazy rock remixes of some. it rules.

Well, I guess I can relate. I strongly disagree, but lots of the hardcore players seem to want is as one. I can see why they would think so though, sinse it's physically just as tiring as running or anything else (possibly more) and there's no limit to the difficulty you can have.

Still, it ain't happening

and... you're the first person I've eer seen who would want to play samba de amigo before any other music game

yeah i can't see DDR ever being played as an official 'sport' at the olympics... but i could see it becoming part of the CPL... http://www.thecpl.com/league/ although they seem more geared towards shooter games at the moment...

space channel 5 was another neat music game for the sega dreamcast.... was REALLY short though... don't think i ever beat it though... had to get a friend to beat the 2nd boss for me... you had to react off time from the music to win and i just couldn't do it

i do enjoy good music games but i can't see myself getting into a dancing game which is why i'd take samba de amigo as the next game i'd play from that style (mainly because i heard parappa part 2 sucked)

Yeah, a few years ago I went through a stage of being disgustingly good at DDR. I don't knwow what happened to me, because I don't particularly enjoy it. It was amusing though, there was always a group of the "local" DDR guys, usually asians who know all the songs backwards. I thought it was fun to walk up and say "Can I play, too?" and kick the shit out of their scores. I think I was having self confidence issues.

Beatmania > ALL!!!

trust me, I think you'd like Beatmania (a DJ styled game) better than Samba de Amigo.... but I'm still surprised that you want it considering no one else likes it >_<
